In Greek mythology, Mount Olympus was the dwelling of the Olympian Gods and it was created after the Titanomachy, the battle during which the Olympians defeated their predecessors, the Titans, in a 10 year long war.The peak Mytikas was then called Pantheon and was the venue where all the fiery discussions among the deities took place. When individuals study ancient Greek and Roman mythos, it's fair to assume Zeus plays the most important role among the Olympian gods. Well, it's important to recognize that each god and goddess has a specific role to play within this context.
For instance, people living in ancient Greece believed being drunk was a gift from Dionysus- as this was interpreted as Dionysus possessing the person's body for a period of time. More specifically, people did not necessarily understand the effects of alcohol, so this was viewed as a gift from Dionysus and his reputation as the life of the party.

Dionysus is the god of wine and drunken revelry in Greek mythology. He is a patron of the theater and an agricultural/fertility god. He was sometimes at the heart of frenzied madness that led to savage murder. Writers often contrast Dionysus with his half-brother Apollo. Where Apollo personifies the cerebral aspects of mankind, Dionysus represents the libido and gratification. Interestingly, Dionysus is also the son of Demeter, and she is responsible for the changing of seasons.
In today's blog, I will discuss why Hephaestus has proven to be the most important of the Olympian gods and goddesses (at least for what he does for everyone else).
In terms of his origin story, one version claims he was thrown off Olympus by his mother Hera. So, what was the reason?
In some versions of the Hephaestus narrative, he was born with physical deformities and the other Olympian gods were not satisfied with his appearance.
As one of the twelve Olympians, Hephaestus was a major deity for the ancient Greeks. In Greek mythology, Hephaestus was primarily the god of fire and smiths, but he was also in charge of other crafts, including sculpting and carpentry. Hephaestus’ parents were Zeus and Hera, and he was married to the goddess Aphrodite. He appears in many myths. (https://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends-europe/hephaestus-0010712)
With that in mind, some visual depictions of Hephaestus have changed over time. More specifically, he is not always presented as suffering from physical deformities. Of course, this would depend on whether he was thrown off Olympus in that specific story, or not.
Unfortunately, his brothers and sisters thought less of him based on his appearance. Funny enough, the joke is really on them. Hephaestus has proven to be one of the most intelligent Olympian gods, based on his skills as a carpenter, craftsman, and blacksmith.
Despite his physical limitations (depending on the myth), Hephaestus is the most skilled blacksmith of all time.

At his forge on Olympus, Hephaestus crafts weapons for his brothers and sisters- allowing their success in battles and defending their godly kingdoms. Also, Hephaestus got the girl.
What I mean is, Hephaestus was married to Aphrodite for some time; and is known as the god of blacksmithing, fire, and the forge. Although his marriage to Aphrodite was organized by Zeus to prevent a war between the gods (they all wanted to marry her), they were still together. Despite his appearance, Hephaestus was respected because of his skills. Also, if Hera wanted fine jewelry- Hephaestus could craft it for her.
Immortals Fenyx Rising:
So, how does this relate to video games? Not surprisingly, Hephaestus has appeared in the God of War series (2005-), as well as Diablo II (2000).

Most recently, Hephaestus makes an appearance in Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising from 2020. This game was originally titled "Gods and Monsters" during development, but this name is ultimately honoured through a quest of the same name during the game's prologue.
Once the player completes the game's prologue, and literally earns their wings, they are faced with the ultimate task of freeing the gods and defeating Typhon. This would be no easy task, so the player needs to take advantage of character upgrades at the Hall of the Gods.

Evidently, this game has somewhat borrow its style from The Legend of Zelda (1986-). However, this is a clear influence from Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed series (2007-). I really like this game, and have banked about five hours so far. Interestingly, some of the writers for this game also worked on Fable (2004-), which is my favourite series of all time.

Not surprisingly, Hephaestus proves his worth in this 2020 video game as well. Once the player reaches the Hall of the Gods, they gain access to several different things. For instance, the player can change their appearance whenever they see necessary. I must admit, I have changed my appearance several times so far.
More importantly, players are able to upgrade their weapons and armor by using Hephaestus' forge throughout the game. If the player is going to defeat Typhon and his army, having the best weapons and armor will be more than necessary. Prior to playing this game, the only franchise I was familiar with (actually played) was Driver (from Ubisoft). However, my new love for this game has inspired me to play Assassins' Creed at some point.
